Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at Navy Elementary

FCPS permits students to bring their Personally Owned Devices to schools for instructional use in the classroom.

Some examples of Personally Owned Devices include:

  • Tablets (Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface, etc)
  • eReaders (Kindle, Nook, etc)
  • iPod Touch
  • Laptop computer

BYOD throughout Fairfax County Public Schools is an automated process. Students that participate are responsible for their devices and both the student and parent are required to read the Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R). When connecting to the wireless, the student will be required to accept the FCPS Acceptable Use Policy via an automated process.

By signing the Students Rights and Responsibilities, you are agreeing to the Acceptable Use Policy for Student Network Access for FCPS.

The following excerpt is from the Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for Families.

Personally Owned Computing/Network Devices (BYOD)

Students using personally owned electronic devices must follow the policy stated in this document while on school property, attending school-sponsored activities, or using the FCPS network.

  • Students using a personally owned device with a wireless connection are only permitted to connect to the FCPS Wi-Fi network (not private cellular service) while on FCPS property.
  • When applicable, appropriate virus-checking software must be installed, updated, and made active prior to any personally owned computing device being placed on the FCPS network.
  • No device placed on the FCPS network will have software that monitors, analyzes, or may cause disruption to the FCPS network.
  • FCPS is not responsible for any device or data loss, theft, damage or other associated costs of replacement or repair as a result of a student participating in the BYOD initiative.
  • FCPS staff will not be responsible to store, support, or troubleshoot a student owned device.
  • Students will take full responsibility for any personally owned device and will appropriately secure all devices when not in use.
  • Activities on the FCPS network may be subject to discovery under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). FCPS reserves the right to monitor and investigate all devices and activities on the FCPS network. The device may also be confiscated by school authorities in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document.

What about security/theft/damage?

Devices are the sole responsibility of the student. FCPS accepts no responsibility for the security or safety of the device. Students are responsible for the security of the device. Teachers and other staff will not store or hold onto devices. School technology support or teachers will not support, repair or troubleshoot student devices.

What is the policy on charging personally owned devices at school?

It is recommended that personally owned devices come to school with a full charge. Students should be made aware that the school is not responsible to provide an opportunity or the necessary power to charge their device during the school day.

What apps/software will be used in the classroom?

FCPS does not provide or require apps or software for personally owned devices. Classroom lessons will be tailored for the technology that all students have access to. If possible, a student may choose to complete the same lesson on their personal device. The internet browser built into the personally owned devices can be used to access FCPS Google Apps for Education as well as FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard).

What happens if the device breaks while in school?

The student will put the device away and take it home at the end of the school day where the student and parent can troubleshoot the device. FCPS has limited resources and cannot provide comprehensive support for the wide variety of devices allowed under this program.

Will the device be protected with Internet Content Filtering?

To facilitate instruction and practice Internet safety, FCPS’ Internet connection is protected by an Internet content filter. Cellular data plans do not use FCPS’ Internet connection and therefore do not use FCPS’ Internet content filter. Students should only use the FCPS WiFi Internet connection with their BYOD device while on FCPS property.

Should I go out and buy my child a device?

Personally owned devices are a supplement to the equipment already in use in the classroom. BYOD is an optional program and parents are not required to purchase a device for their child. However, parents who are considering technology purchases for their students may want to explore the Technology@Homeprogram. While FCPS does not recommend specific technology products, Technology@Home enables FCPS students and staff members to purchase and/or download technology products for home use directly from vendors at discounted rates. It includes computers, software, and other technology products.
