This year's STEAM Fair featured a wide variety of projects and presentations. One notable addition were the presentations done by the Oakton High School Robotics Team. High school students, some Navy alumni, showed off their research and answered questions from our students.
We also reached our $20,000 Read-A-Thon fundraising goal and Mr. Simms-Smith was silly-stringed by our SCA officers in front our our second graders, who had the highest fundraising amounts at the time. Our amazing PTO provided the silly string and the hazmat suit!
On Friday, students dressed up like a teacher/professor. This student nailed his Mr. Simms-Smith look, even down to the Steelers jersey!
Have a relaxing Spring Break!
Navy's Read-A-Thon Enters the Final Week!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far and keep reading!

Safe, Supported, and Included- the FCPS Family Summit 2024
The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.
Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association.
This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan. More details will be available after spring break.
New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces
FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.
These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.
Fairfax Water Spring Flushing Program
Each Spring, Fairfax Water conducts its routine water main flushing program, which helps maintain the high quality of water in the distribution system. During this program, Fairfax Water personnel open fire hydrants and allow them to flow freely for a short period.
Flushing may result in temporary discoloration and the presence of sediment in the water. These conditions are not harmful and should be of very short duration. This is best resolved by letting the water run until it clears up.
During this flushing period, a slight change is made in the disinfectant used by switching from chloramines to chlorine. You may notice a chlorine taste and odor in water during this time. The water is safe to drink. For anyone sensitive to this taste and odor, it is recommended that an open container of water be set aside, which will allow it to dissipate.
The flushing program and disinfectant switch are scheduled to begin on March 25, 2024, and finish on May 6, 2024. For more information on this program, please visit Fairfax Water Spring Flushing.
