Read Across America Week
This week at Navy Elementary our students, teachers and staff celebrated “Read Across America”! “Read Across America” was launched in 1998 by the National Education Association and has become the largest reading celebration across the U.S. Our specialists planned a week of fun that focused on the importance of reading being a fun adventure for everyone. To make our event special, each day of the week we celebrated a different theme. On Monday we enjoyed “Multicultural Monday” and students in 1st-6th grade heard a presentation from guest authors from Ink who shared more about their mission for increasing diversity in children’s literature. Our students enjoyed hearing about how these young entrepreneurs from South Lakes Highschool have published 4 books that represent diverse perspectives. On Tuesday we enjoyed focusing on Non-fiction texts and on Wednesday we celebrated “Wonderful Women” by reading about amazing women and their impact on our lives. On Thursday we focused on texts that convey thoughtfulness and connecting with characters. We finished off our week with a fun day of reading in our pajamas! Thank you to all the students for participating in our Spirit Week, the parents for donating the treats for our “Professional Book Tasting”, and our administration for their support. A special thanks to Ink, to our specialists, Flipper the Dolphin, and of course to our teachers, who make the magic happen each and every day for our students!
